Since 1871, a major objective of the National Rifle Association of America has been the training of people of good repute in the safe handling & proper use of firearms. Today, as the nation's premier firearm training organization, the NRA continues to introduce thousands of individuals annually to the basics of safe, enjoyable shooting through the NRA Basic Firearm Training Program.
The NRA's tradition of shooting education is over 137 years old, but the training methodologies used in NRA courses are regularly updated to reflect the latest instructional techniques & ensure the presentation of educationally sound, quality firearm training that is simple, effective & enjoyable. The administrative policies governing the conduct of NRA training courses are also periodically revised to help maintain the program's nationally recognized training standards as well as to ensure that NRA firearm training is available to every law-abiding individual who wishes to receive it.
NRA Basic Firearm Courses are for law-abiding US citizen or legal permanent resident alien adults &/or minors accompanied by a parent or legal guardian (as defined by applicable federal, state or local law) desiring the basic knowledge, skills & attitude necessary for owning, maintaining & using a firearm safely.
Ladies-Only classes are available. Please call Marie for information.
Defensive Specialties, LLC requires any student under the age of 18 to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. For shooting classes, students must be at least 8 years old due to the rules at our range.
NRA courses are not available to any individual who has been convicted of a crime of violence or who is prohibited by federal, state or local law from possessing firearms.
For safety, only "dummy" ammunition will be used for demonstration purposes. Reloading classes do not allow firearms to be brought into our classroom. NO live ammunition will be allowed in the classroom for firearms classes.
For most classes that require shooting, you may bring your own firearm & ammunition. We also have .22 pistols & rifles and 12 or 20 gauge shotguns available for your use. Ammo may be available for purchase, depending on the caliber.
Shooting exercises are conducted at an outdoor range. Please dress appropriately. Eye & ear protection is required. We recommend a high-necked shirt & hat. Hot brass can blister. Flip-flops, sandals, crocs, bare feet & anything similar will not be allowed. You must wear full-coverage shoes such as tennis shoes, hiking boots, etc.
Lunches (for full day classes) & range fees are included with your class.
While you will see classes set up in the calendar, our schedule is flexible. Please contact us if you have a specific date in mind & a different class is listed. We will try to work with your schedule.
