NRA's First Step Classes

FIRST = Firearm Instruction, Responsibility & Safety Training. This sums up the NRA's First Steps Program.


While this action-specific class provides a thorough introduction to firearm safety, handling & shooting skills, we do encourage you to take the NRA Basics of Pistol, Rifle or Shotgun Shooting classes after becoming more comfortable with your pistol, rifle or shotgun.  We also encourage you to participate in local shooting activities that will help you maintain & develop your shooting skills.


These courses are 3 - 4 hours long.  Lunch is not served in these classes.


These classes are not kept on our regular training schedule.  Please contact us to set an appointment

NRA FIRST STEPS PISTOL

NRA's First Steps Pistol class is designed to provide a new pistol owner with a hands-on introduction to the safe handling & proper orientation for one specific pistol model:  the one that you bring with you.  


You may have just purchased this pistol.  You may have inherited it.  This hands-on class will introduce you to the methods of safely owning, maintaining & using your handgun.


Lessons in the First Steps Pistol class include:


  • Introduction of Pistol Safety, Parts & Operation
  • Introduction to Ammunition
  • Fundamentals of Pistol Shooting
  • Introduction to Pistol Shooting from the Benchrest Position
  • Introduction to Pistol Cleaning & Storage
  • Training Opportunities


You will need to provide:


  • A notebook
  • A pen & highlighter
  • Eye & ear protection
  • Your pistol
  • Your pistol case, if you have one
  • Your pistol owner's manual, if you have one
  • 100 Rounds of ammunition (Call us if you are unsure what to purchase.)


Other Notes:


While this class is designed to introduce you to a particular pistol (yours), if you do not have one AND you are interested in a particular action type, you are welcome to try our selection.

NRA FIRST STEPS RIFLE

NRA's First Steps Rifle class is designed to provide a new rifle owner with a hands-on introduction to the safe handling & proper orientation for one specific rifle model:  the one that you bring with you.  


You may have just purchased this rifle.  You may have inherited it.  This hands-on class will introduce you to the methods of safely owning, maintaining, & using your rifle.

NRA First Steps Shotgun

NRA's First Steps Shotgun class is designed to provide a new shotgun owner with a hands-on introduction to the safe handling & proper orientation for one specific shotgun model:  the one that you bring with you.  


You may have just purchased this shotgun.  You may have inherited it.  This hands-on class will introduce you to the methods of safely owning, maintaining, & using your shotgun.


Lessons in the First Steps Shotgun Course include:


  • Introduction of Shotgun Safety, Parts, & Operation
  • Introduction to Ammunition
  • Fundamentals of Shotgun Shooting
  • Introduction to Shotgun Shooting at Straightaway Targets
  • Introduction to Shotgun Cleaning & Storage
  • Training Opportunities


You will need to provide: 


  • A notebook
  • A pen & highlighter
  • Eye & ear protection
  • Your shotgun
  • Your shotgun case, if you have one
  • Your shotgun owner's manual, if you have one
  • 50 Rounds (2 boxes) of shotgun ammunition (7-1/2, 8, or 9 shot)

While this class is designed to introduce you to a particular shotgun (yours), if you do not have one AND you are interested in a particular action type, you are welcome to try our selection.

Having Fun with First Steps

    Reminders:

    Defensive Specialties, LLC requires any student under the age of 18 to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.  For shooting classes, students must be at least 8 years old due to the rules at our range. 


    Ladies:  If you are pregnant or nursing, we will require a written doctor's authorization allowing you to shoot & handle ammunition. 


    Shooting exercises are conducted at an outdoor range.  Please dress appropriately.  Eye & ear protection is required.  We recommend a high-necked shirt.  Hot brass can blister.  Flip-flops, sandals & bare feet will not be allowed.  You must wear full-coverage shoes such as tennis shoes. 


    Only "dummy" ammunition is allowed in the classroom.


    Class Materials, a Completion Certificate & Range Fees are included in the course fee.  


    There is a (minimum) non-refundable $50.00 deposit required for registration.  If you are unable to attend the class after registering, this deposit will be applied to your next registration.


    While you will see classes set up in the calendar, our schedule is flexible.  Please contact us if you have a specific date in mind & a different class is listed.  We will try to work with your schedule.


    Family, Group & Multi-Class Discounts are available.  Gift certificates are available.
