NRA's Basics of Home Firearm Safety is a 4-hour non-shooting class designed to develop the knowledge, skills & attitude necessary for the safe handling & storing of firearms in the home.
The goal of the NRA's Home Firearm Safety Instructor Course is to develop NRA Certified Instructors who possess the knowledge, skills & attitude necessary to conduct the NRA Home Firearm Safety Course.
NOTE FOR INSTRUCTOR CANDIDATES:
The BASIC HFS class is not a requirement for Instructor Candidates. But you must be familiar with all of the different action types for pistols, rifles & shotguns.

NRA's Home Firearm Safety Class is a 4-hour non-shooting class designed to develop the knowledge, skills & attitude necessary for the safe handling & storing of firearms in the home.
This class is appropriate for older children as well as adults.
Lunch is not served in this class.

Defensive Specialties, LLC requires any student under the age of 18 to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
Students are NOT allowed to bring firearms to this class. Any student bringing a firearm into the classroom will be dismissed.
Ladies: If you are pregnant or nursing, we will require a written doctor's authorization allowing you to handle firearms & "dummy" ammunition.
Only "dummy" ammunition is allowed in the classroom.
Class Materials & a Completion Certificate are included in the course fee.
While you will see classes set up in the calendar, our schedule is flexible. Please contact us if you have a specific date in mind & a different class is listed. We will try to work with your schedule.
Family, Group, & Multi-Class Discounts are available. Gift certificates are available.
There is a $25 non-refundable deposit due upon registration. If you are unable to take your class after registration, this deposit will be applied to your next class.
The NRA Home Firearms Safety Instructor course is offered once per calendar quarter (in conjunction with the Basics of Home Firearm Safety class).
We try to offer Basic classes once per week for your convenience. If a basic class doesn't meet your schedule (or if you have a specific date in mind & something else is scheduled), please contact us.
The goal of the NRA's Home Firearm Safety Instructor Course is to develop NRA Certified Instructors who possess the knowledge, skills & attitude necessary to conduct the NRA Home Firearm Safety class.
We offer this course once per calendar quarter & run it in conjunction with a Basic Home Firearm Safety class. Attending the Basic class is NOT a requirement to taking this class AS LONG AS you are a safe, competent, knowledgeable shooter. Pre-quals apply. Keep on reading.
This class is for EXPERIENCED shooters only. It is to teach you the NRA methods for teaching a basic student, not to teach you how to handle or work firearms. You MUST know safe unloading procedures for all of the different actions types of pistols, rifles, & shotguns.
This non-shooting class consists of 2 parts over 1-2 days:
Basic Instructor Training (BIT). If you have taken BIT within the last 2 years, please let us know. This will reduce your class by one day. If it has been longer than 2 years, you will need to take it again.
NRA Home Firearm Safety Instructor Training

Pricing includes BIT (if necessary), the HFS Instructor Course & Lunches.
If you have had BIT within the last 2 years, this will reduce your time by a day. (We don't charge for BIT, so, no, it won't save you any on the class fee. Sorry...) If it has been over 2 years since you had BIT, you will need to take it again.
Only "dummy" ammunition is allowed in the classroom.
The NRA requires we have a minimum of 4 registrants in order for an Instructor course to hold. Registration ends 72 hours before the Basic HFS class starts.
NRA Processing/Certification Fees are not included. You will pay this directly to the NRA after your class is completed.
There is a $50 (minimum) non-refundable deposit required for registration. If you are unable to attend the class after registering, this deposit will be applied to your next registration.
If you would like to join the NRA or renew your membership, you may click on the link to the left to go to the NRA website or you may sign up during your class. Either way, you'll receive a discount off the regular sign-up fee. This discount is in addition to the benefits of belonging to the NRA.
