NRA's Defensive Pistol Class

Course Overview:

         NRA's Basic Defensive Pistol Course is an          advanced-level class for those desiring the       knowledge, skills, & attitude to carry & use a       concealed pistol ethically, responsibly, & with                                       confidence.


It is recommended by the NRA that this class be taken soon after the successful completion of the NRA Basic Pistol Course while the information from that class is still fresh in your mind.


This course is one full day.


You will need to provide:             


  • A notebook           
  • A pen & highlighter
  • Eye & ear protection           
  • A quality pistol appropriate for concealed carry (A 9mm or .38 Special is the minimum recommended by the NRA.  But bring what you can handle comfortably.)          
  • A pocket pistol, if you have one you would like to shoot           
  • A strong side hip holster (fitted leather or kydex that covers the trigger/trigger guard is  recommended by the NRA)        
  • A good, sturdy belt            
  • 250 rounds of ammunition           
  • A magazine or speedloader carrier    
  • At least 2 spare magazines or speedloaders       
  • A magazine or speedloader holder   
  • A concealment garment

  • The importance of carrying and using a pistol responsibly & ethically for personal protection


  • How the NRA Rules for Safe Gun Handling are applied to concealed carry


  • Basic Principles of Concealment


  • Mental Awareness & Preparation to develop a defensive mindset for carrying & using a pistol for personal protection


  • Techniques for avoiding life-threatening confrontations


  • Psychological & Physiological changes that may occur during an attack


  • Flash Sight Picture


  • Cover & Concealment


  • Reloading under stress


  • Immediate Action Drills to include: 
    • Presenting a pistol from concealment 
    • Shooting targets at varying distances 
    • Moving off the line of attack 
    • Clearing common stoppages


  • Pocket Pistols - Advantages & Disadvantages

You must have successfully completed the NRA Basic Pistol Course prior to taking the NRA's Defensive Pistol Course. 


If you did not take Basic Pistol with Defensive Specialties, LLC, you will need to provide us with a copy of your Course Completion Certificate. 


Other Notes:
 

Defensive Specialties, LLC requires any student under the age of 18 to be  accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.  For shooting classes, students must be at least 8 years old due to the rules at our range. 


Ladies:  If you are pregnant or nursing, we will require a written doctor's authorization allowing you to shoot & handle ammunition. 


Shooting exercises are conducted at an outdoor range.  Please dress appropriately.  Eye & ear protection is required.  We recommend a high- necked shirt.  Hot brass can blister.  Flip-flops, sandals, & bare feet will not be allowed.  You must wear full-coverage shoes such as tennis shoes. 


Only "dummy" ammunition is allowed in the classroom.


Class Materials, a Completion Certificate, Lunch, & Range Fees are included in the course fee.  


There is a (minimum) non-refundable $50.00  deposit required for registration.  If you are unable to attend the class after registering, this deposit will be applied to your next registration.


While you will see classes set up in the calendar, our schedule is flexible.  Please contact us if you have a specific date in mind & a different class is listed.  We will try to work with your schedule.
