Security Guards, also called security officers, patrol & inspect property to protect against fire, theft, vandalism, terrorism & illegal activity. They protect their employer's property, enforce rules & regulations on the property, deter criminal activity & other problems. These workers may be armed. They use various forms of telecommunications to call for assistance from police, fire or emergency medical services. Security guards write comprehensive reports outlining their observations & activities during their assigned shift. They also may interview witnesses or victims, prepare case reports & testify in court.*

The Georgia Board of Private Detective and Security Agencies administers "The Private Detective & Security Agencies Act" to safeguard the citizens of this state by regulation of private detective & security businesses. The Board consists of seven members appointed by the Governor. The Board has authority to determine qualifications of applicants for licensure & to investigate complaints & take appropriate disciplinary action.
The Board meets at scheduled times in Macon. These meetings are open to the public. Persons wishing to bring matters for the Board’s consideration should submit written request to the office.
Private detective businesses are required to be licensed & the employees of the company engaged in investigative activities are required to be registered.
Private security companies are required to be licensed & armed security guards of the companies are required to be registered.
Unarmed security guards are not required to be registered, but are required to be trained in accordance with the rules of the Board.

The Georgia Board of Private Detectives & Security Agencies has set out specific training standards of individuals who possess or will possess an exposed or concealed weapon license.
This is a basic course designed to orient students to the characteristics, parts, & design of firearms as well as the proper use & safety of such firearms.

Range Course of Fire:
*With or Without Barricade
During the Course of Fire, holders of weapon permits must qualify with the same type/caliber of weapon that they carry.
A minimum of 144 rounds of ammunition must be fired as practice & two (2) strings of 48 rounds with the highest score to be used for qualification. A passing score of 70% must be met.
The shooting exercises are conducted at an outdoor range. Please dress appropriately. Eye and ear protection is required. We recommend a high-necked shirt. Hot brass can blister. Flip-flops, sandals, and bare feet will not be allowed. You must wear full-coverage shoes such as tennis shoes.
Ladies: If you are pregnant or nursing, we will require a written doctor's authorization allowing you to shoot and handle ammunition.
Successful completion of the State of GA Armed Security Officer Course will allow you to receive your Blue Card license from whatever agency or agencies you will be working for. Your company/companies will apply for this license for you.
The course fee includes Class Materials, Lunches, a Completion Certificate, & Range Fees.

The Security Shotgun Qualification Course is a Georgia Secretary of State-approved class & meets all requirements to obtain a shotgun license.
According to Board Rule 509-3-.08, Instructors shall qualify personnel authorized to carry a shotgun according to a course of fire acceptable to the Board. A minimum passing score of 80% must be achieved on the firing range, proctored by a firearms instructor licensed by the Board. All armed personnel must comply with the requirements of Board Rule 509-4-.01.
All agencies using 12 gauge riot-type shotguns, or other type of shotgun approved by the Board, shall provide training to personnel authorized to carry a shotgun according to the curriculum approved by the Board prior to issuance of weapons.

Note to Private Detectives: While we do offer your annual Firearms Qualification Course, we do not currently offer your Continuing Education course.
According to Board Rule 509-3-.12:
Any registered employee who renews a registration after September 1, 2007 must comply with continuing education requirements contained in this rule.
Exemption for Newly-Registered Employees: Security employees who obtain their first registration by the Board within the second year of the renewal cycle (after September 1 of the even-numbered year) will not be required to obtain continuing education hours for the first renewal of their registration.
Registered security employees must have eight (8) hours of continuing education prior to renewal of employee registrations. Employees registered as security guards must have sixteen (16) hours of continuing education prior to renewal of employee registrations.

This additional course allows the Armed Security Officer to carry a different caliber pistol. This class must be taken for each caliber the officer is interested in carrying.
